June 2007 Meeting Report

(Minutes by Jamie, photos by Dave F.)

1. Club Business - not published on the web for privacy reasons - all members are sent a full copy of the meeting minutes by email.

2. New Members - we welcomed two new members - David A. and Allen G.

3. President's Challenge - for the July meeting will be any work of marquetry either finished or in-progress.

4. Veneer: Ken H. passed out veneer packs to attendees. The veneer was donated to the club by the son of a local Marquetarian. Allen G. also brought in a lot of veneer scraps from his large collection to share with the group. Thank you!

5. Report - Dave F. gave a short report on the presentation/demo entitled "Marquetry for Woodturners" that he gave at the June 6th Silicon Valley Woodturners meeting.

6. Show and Tell

David A. tried a project from the book "The Marquetry Course" that incorporated sand shading. He's planning to inset it into a table.

8. Prize Draw - Congratulations to David A. for winning a Sawdust Shop gift certificate!

9. Dues and Membership
Dues for our Nor Cal Group are $5 per year; National (AMS) dues are $20 per year with a $5 one time initiation fee. 2007 dues can be paid at the next meeting or send $5.00 to Jim Sweet, PO Box 3502, Saratoga, 95070.

10. Meetings
We meet on the 4th Saturday of January followed by the 3rd Tuesday night for February and March.  This rotating schedule continues throughout the year. Meetings are regularly held at The Sawdust Shop in Sunnyvale unless otherwise announced. The meeting dates for the remainder of 2007 are:

11. Guests
Guests are welcome at our meetings. If you want to get involved, drop by The Sawdust Store and ask Craig Colvin for the Marquetry Package: this has a pattern for a marquetry picture; plans for the angled cutting table and for the bird's mouth flat table. Craig can advise you on tools and supplies and he sells veneers.  You can join our Club and pay dues at the next meeting.

Dave F. brought in a book he won on eBay recently, called "The Art of Marquetry in 18th Century Russia." He also showed us a bowl that he turned with a marquetry inset at the bottom.
7. Demonstration - Jim S. gave us a demonstration on inlaying veneer with a Dremel tool and chisel. He created a handout with the directions and brought in blocks of wood and veneer for us to use. We all got to try out the technique - with mostly good success!
