January 2007 Meeting
(Minutes by Jamie, photos by Dave F.)
1. Members
Ken announced that we now have 30 paid members and there are another ten from last year who probably will pay dues and be members this year.
2. Beginners Class
We told the people who signed up at the San Mateo Wood Show that we would teach them the marquetry basics. On Jan. 12 (9am-12 noon) we had eight people show up and Ken, Linda and Dave F. showed them start-to-finish how to make a marquetry picture. Ken used the elec. Scroll saw and Dave used the hand fret saw. All eight people joined our Group. Some photos of the training session are on our website here.
3. Slideshow
Dave F. showed a video of the Marquetry Entries at the Pearl River, NY National AMS show in October. Three of our members sent in entries (Jim S., Dave P. and Dave F.).
4. Safety
Dave F. showed us his bandage and talked about how he cut his middle left finger with an Xacto knife due to a moments inattention. It required a trip to the emergency room and three stitches. Marquetry is pretty safe - but the knives we use are extremely sharp - just ask Dave! Be careful out there!
5. President's Challenge
The President's Challenge for the January meeting was to bring in a finished marquetry picture. Congratulations to Dave F. - he won an X-Acto knife - but declined (see 5. above!) so Bob T. took it. Be careful, Bob!
6. Show and Tell
Shirley brought in a box she made with an inlay design using a scrollsaw.
Dave F. showed us a 24" x 24" sign (unfinished, because he cut his finger!) he created for his friend's new Greek Restaurant that features a pelican and windmill.
He also finished the Moon/Mountain/Tree picture he cut during the January training class and brought in his preliminary Golden Gate picture.
Bob T. showed us his finished moon/tree picture from the January marquetry training class.
Ken H. brought in the collaborative Moon/Mountain/Tree picture from the January marquetry training class and a turned bowl with a marquetry center.
7. Demo
Dave P. showed us 3 methods for adding fine lines to marquetry pieces: over-cut method, knife cutting with wood inlay, and knife cutting with filler inlay.
Below is an 8-minute streaming video of Dave P. demonstrating the double bevel cutting method, explaining which way to cut for drop-down or push-up pieces, showing how to do a fine line cut, and talking a bit about sand shading. Enjoy!
Here are some photos showing Dave doing his "fine line making" demonstration:
After lunch, we spent some time in the workshop having a go practicing some of the fine line making techniques that Dave had shown us. Here are a few photos of some of our members hard at work!
8. Dues and Membership
Dues for our Nor Cal Group are $5 per year; National (AMS) dues are $20 per year with a $5 one time initiation fee. 2007 dues can be paid at the next meeting or send $5.00 to Jim Sweet, PO Box 3502, Saratoga, 95070.

10. Guests
Guests are welcome at our meetings. If you want to get involved, drop by The Sawdust Store and ask Craig Colvin for the Marquetry Package: this has a pattern for a marquetry picture; plans for the angled cutting table and for the bird's mouth flat table. Craig can advise you on tools and supplies and he sells veneers. You can join our Club and pay dues at the next meeting.
