February 2007 Meeting Report

1. Club Business - not published on web for privacy reasons - all members are sent a full copy of the meeting minutes by email.
2. President's Challenge - The President's Challenge for the February meeting was to bring in a finished Golden Gate picture. Congratulations to Dave F. for being the only entrant. He won a cutting mat.
3. Show and Tell
Dave F. brought in his Golden Gate picture that he cut with a laser. He also showed us a nice marquetry picture he purchased on E-bay.
Ken H. showed us his unfinished Golden Gate picture and discussed three different ways of inserting thin lines.
Rob R. told us about his current project where he needs to cover PVC pipes with veneer. He used a double thickness of veneer and also received a suggestion to use Kangaroo glue.

4. Demonstration - Rob R. demonstrated how to create a basket weave design:
- Start with larger pieces of veneer and use a veneer saw to cut strips about 2" wide.
- Cut another veneer into strips about 1/8" wide.
- Sand shade the edges of the larger pieces. Sand shading causes the wood to shrink so dip it in a bath of water and place between MDF and let it dry slowly to flatten.
- Using a wide strip of paper tape lay alternating strips of wide and thin veneers. Use a wire brush and brush the tape to the veneers while the tape is still wet.
- Cut into strips with a veneer saw to the desired width and stagger the strips to form the basket weave pattern.

5. Dues and Membership
Dues for our Nor Cal Group are $5 per year; National (AMS) dues are $20 per year with a $5 one time initiation fee. 2007 dues can be paid at the next meeting or send $5.00 to Jim Sweet, PO Box 3502, Saratoga, 95070.
6. Meetings
We meet on the 4th Saturday of January followed by the 3rd Tuesday night for February and March. This rotating schedule continues throughout the year. Meetings are regularly held at The Sawdust Shop in Sunnyvale unless otherwise announced. The meeting dates for the remainder of 2007 are:

- Saturday July 28
- Tuesday August 21
- Tuesday September 18
- Saturday October 27
- Tuesday November 20
- Tuesday December 4 (Christmas Party)
7. Guests
Guests are welcome at our meetings. If you want to get involved, drop by The Sawdust Store and ask Craig Colvin for the Marquetry Package: this has a pattern for a marquetry picture; plans for the angled cutting table and for the bird's mouth flat table. Craig can advise you on tools and supplies and he sells veneers. You can join our Club and pay dues at the next meeting.
